ABSTRACT This paper reports a snapshot of the current state of high school economic education in five Eastern European nations. The findings of this paper indicate that the 20-item TEL that was developed and translated for use in this project is a reliable instrument for use in high school classrooms in five different countries. The findings of this paper also indicate that the National Council on Economic Education's in-service teacher training workshops and its efforts to have workshop participants develop effective teaching materials and techniques are beginning to have a positive influence on student test performance in the countries where they have been used most extensively.
